Ohio family law: Making divorce work for the kids

To kids, divorce can feel like the end of the world, and in a way it is. It is the end of all that they have come to know. How parents handle themselves during and after divorce will have a significant effect on how well children cope with the change in their family dynamic. A family law attorney can help parents in Ohio create parenting plans that serve the best interests of the children, but it is up to each parent to put it into action in a way that lets the kids know that everything will be okay.

The process of dissolving one's marriage is challenging, there is no doubt about it. When children are involved, things are even harder. Parents can struggle trying to figure out child custody and support issues. A lot of times, both parents may not agree on what is best.

When children see their parents arguing over them, not sticking to custody or support orders or just being mean to each other, it can have a real effect on their lives. Some children end up acting out, some begin to perform poorly in school and some just shut down. It is believed that children will ultimately model the moods, actions and behaviors of their parents. So, parents who can be positive, calm and honest about the difficult situation are likely to have children who can more easily cope with the divorce.

Displaying this type of behavior may not be easy, especially if parents do not agree on things. There is nothing wrong with having different opinions, but when and how those opinions are expressed really does matter. With the assistance of a family law attorney, divorcing parents in Ohio can set up custody arrangements that include options for dispute resolutions. Parents who can abide by the rules set forth in a custody plan will only help themselves and their children as they strive to move forward.
